Redemption after Addiction

Jessica Roberts

Jessica experienced a very different upbringing than most of our other storytellers so far. But like most of us, she had a deep desire to be known, to have a place to belong. She thought she’d finally found her identity and community as an army wife... until she was suddenly an army widow. This story involves sorrow, but it's also a beautiful love story with details woven throughout it that could only be orchestrated by a higher power. Jessica's story is a beautiful journey of ultimately discovering the One who loves and knows her best of all.

When we’re going through the routines of daily life, we forget that one moment can suddenly shift and shape our entire future. Today’s storyteller, Holli, experienced a defining moment like this at the age of 16 when a child ran in front of her car while she was driving home. Holli shares the challenges of walking through such a traumatic incident as a teen, and how what she had come to believe about God helped her regain confidence, find her identity outside of the accident, and experience the depth of His love as the story continues to unfold even today.

Amy Grote (from Episode 20) and her mom, Lisa, share at the first gathering of our new branch - ST Live Bham 280. The common thread of their stories is a mingling of joy and grief. Amy and Lisa share how God prepared and sustained them through each season of loss, allowing them to embrace and celebrate the joyful moments. Amy M. Williams

While Amy considered herself a good-works kid, she found herself, as an adult, stuck in a pattern of making poor choices. In her words, "Sometimes even with the right heart, you can go in the wrong direction." Shame felt from these detours kept Amy from having confidence in herself and in her future. It would take a long, painful journey through infertility, a lot of personal brokenness, and an unexpected adoption to bring her to a place where she finally trusted God and believed He had a good and beautiful plan for her future.

Heather Rhoades

Heather has not only fought through several open heart surgeries AND breast cancer, but she's also become a mom to five children through international adoption. Heather and her husband most recently adopted in 2015, bringing home two older children…a brother and sister from Ukraine, who were 15 and 11 years old respectively at the time. While the decision process was not necessarily easy or comfortable, God revealed and confirmed His plan for their family in incredible ways. Heather has learned that when something stays on your mind, you should take time to see what God is saying about it!

Suzanne Pirkle

Suzanne found at an early age that she could protect herself from criticism or ridicule by controlling her appearance and performance. Since then, her bent toward perfectionism has played out in several areas of her life including school grades, body image, career, and even parenting. Suzanne discusses a huge shift in her perspective and approach to life when she found the freedom and joy of living in balance rather than in the extreme.
